What You Should Know About Acne Cosmetica

Most ladies love make-up. I don't know whether it is because it helps cover up some flaws or has the ability to turn a dull looking face to a radiant one. For me it helps cover up some flaws, makes me look great and boosts my confidence. All these happen if the make-up is applied properly and the make-up product does not cause irritation. I have discovered that not all make-up products are suitable for me. A product I used recently gave me a series of small acne on my forehead, fortunately I could identify the product and quickly stopped using it.

I later researched on the type of acne that occurred and found out that it is called 'Acne cosmetica', a mild and fairly common form of acne. It is mild in the sense that the acne is triggered by topical products (that you can immediately stop) rather than the complex process that causes true acne. It can strike any body, those that are acne prone and those who don't seem to have acne.

It is characterized by small, rash like pink bumps on the cheeks, chin and forehead and develops over the course of a few weeks or months and may persist indefinitely. From my experience, the breakout occurred within 8 hours and was on my forehead and it persisted for about 2 weeks. I guess I really had a problem with the product. It is important that if you experience a breakout due to a make-up product or even a skin care product like a moisturizer or body lotion and can identify the product, PLEASE discontinue the use of that product. To be sure that the product is actually the culprit, discontinue for a few days to check if it is subsides and if you have more breakout with your other make-up products.

WHAT EXACTLY CAUSES MAKE-UP TO CAUSE ACNE: Ingredients that are comedogenic or acnegenic have been indicated as the cause of acne breakout in people. These ingredients might clog the pores leading to flare up of acne. This is aided by the fact that make-up during the course of the day/night disappears either by it rubbing off on your clothes or handkerchief or it is absorbed by the skin which leads to clogged pores. Though not all the ingredients might cause true plugging of the follicle, some might cause follicular irritation which leads to small, persistent bumps known as "cosmetic acne".

Some of the comedogenic ingredients that should be avoided when acquiring make-up products are derivatives of lanolin, laureth-4 and D & C red dyes. Oil free make-up is especially good for people with oil faces/skin. It is important that when purchasing make-up that you obtain products that are non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic and do not contain any ingredient that could cause irritation to your skin. Always look at the ingredients on the pack or product before you buy any cosmetic product.

Though studies have shown that make-up does not cause true acne, it can exacerbate the condition. It is also important to note that applying make-up whether it is non-comedogenic/non-acnegenic or not when exercising can lead to breakout. Therefore it is safer that you do not apply make-up when exercising. Even when you have acne from cosmetic/make-up or other causes, the acne should be treated effectively with an acne treatment that is suitable for you.
