How to Get Rid of Acne Scars - Are Invasive Treatments Best?

When looking for ways to get rid of acne scars you may have come across various different treatment options. How do you know what the best treatments are and do they work? In this article we will look at the various treatment options available and discuss whether invasive treatments such as laser resurfacing and chemical peels are better than less invasive treatments such as topical creams and ointments.

When deciding on the best course of treatment, you need to know what type of scars you have. This will determine what the best course of treatment is. Often the scars look like small holes or open pores, or like shallow pits. Sometimes, they can look like a raised mass of tissue or just small imperfections.

If you have shallow scars and small imperfections you might think about treatments such as dermabrasion, chemical peels and laser resurfacing. All these treatments work on the principle of removing the top layer of the skin in order to remove the scars and leave a smoother surface. Even though these procedures are quick and only take from 30 minutes to an hour, they are extremely costly. Laser resurfacing is the most expensive, costing around $3000 per treatment, and chemical peels are the cheapest, costing around $750 per treatment. However, you may need several treatments to achieve the desired result. Usually the skin is red and swollen afterwards and can take a couple of weeks to recover.

You could also try dermal filler which involves materials such as collagen, fat and polymer implants being injected into the depressed area of the scar to help raise it to the level of the surrounding skin. Unfortunately the results are only temporary, lasting between three to six months and the treatment costs anything from $300 to £1200.

For more severe scarring punch techniques or subcision procedures are recommended. These treatments are done under anesthetic and involve cutting the scar from the skin. These treatments are less expensive, costing less than $200 per treatment, but may require a few treatments. Common side effects are bruising and swelling which may last for several weeks.

Getting rid of acne scars is often a difficult process and may require a combination of treatments to get the best results. For example, punch techniques or subcision for deeper scarring might need to be combined with laser resurfacing or chemical peeling in order to smooth the skin.

The advantages of these types of invasive treatments are that they are quick to perform and are effective in getting rid acne scars after only a few treatments. However, these treatments are extremely costly and not without risks.

If you are not sure about invasive treatments, then there are other options available. The use of topical creams, ointments and gels can help in getting rid of scars by softening, smoothing and reducing fine acne scarring. Milder creams can be bought over the counter, but stronger medications can only be obtained through prescription. Mederma gel, Alpha Hydroxy skin treatment and Bio Oil are a few of the many commercial brands of creams and gels available which help to get rid of acne scars.

Acne scar creams are certainly cheaper than more invasive treatments but do not work for everyone. This type of treatment is not a quick fix and will often take time and patience before you see any results.

Having acne scars, especially on the face, can really affect your self-confidence and self-esteem. Which treatment you choose depends on how the scars are affecting your life and how quickly and effectively you want to get rid of them. Invasive treatments certainly seem to be the quickest and best options, but they can be extremely costly and there could be side effects and risks. Creams and ointments are a cheaper method of getting rid of scars but it will take a much longer time to see results, if at all. In the end, it is your choice, but it's advisable to consult your doctor or dermatologist.
