Let's Define Acne

The skin has two types of glands: sweat glands and sebaceous glands. Sweat glands are used to secrete sweat and other substances that our body does not need. Sebaceous glands are glands that are in charge of the production of sebum which causes our skin to be oily. While we might not like having oily skin, that oil prevents the evaporation of water from our skin and helps to keep it moisturized. When sebum secretion is disrupted because of the blockage of our pores, we get acne.

Acne is a condition in which many of the pores on our skin are blocked and result in the formation of several pimples. Pimples occur when bacteria start reproducing in a blocked follicle and cause inflammation which might give off a reddish appearance then as the content liquefies it turns to pus. The problem with acne is that it might leave off scars and produce different discolorations on the skin.

The factors that increase the appearance of acne are changes in hormone levels (that is why teenagers usually have acne problems), it runs in your family, the consumption of certain medications like seizure medications, and putting on heavy creams or makeup that are greasy.

There are no real treatments for acne but some preventive actions might help control the problem. Washing your face to remove excess oils, exfoliating your skin to get rid of dead skin cells that might be blocking the pores, using over the counter products can help reduce the recurrence of acne. Microdermabrasion, a type of exfoliating procedure that involves the use of small crystals to remove dead skin cells, might also be able to help reduce acne and it can help to get rid of minor acne scars.
