How Acne Scars Form

We all hate acne and the aftermath it leaves behind. While it is best to prevent acne from forming we still will deal with it from time to time. What can be done about acne scaring is one of the most common questions I hear. Well let's discuss acne scaring. Acne is like any of trauma to the skin it has the chance to leave a scare. Some scars are more severe then others. These scars tend to become more visible as we age because of the loss of collagen in the skin. Scars are very unsightly and need to be prevented and treated.

Once acne clears a dark spot forms on the skin. Most often it is a post inflammatory hyper pigmentation or a PIH. The dark color of the skin is a result of natural body repair. The PIH will fade after a year or two but if not you may need to get treatment for it.

Types of acne scars

Acne scars are either raised or depressed. Raised scars are created in people who develop keloids which is a growth of tissues at the site of an injury. Keloid removal is not an easily treatable by sugary because it may cause new Keloids.

The next type of scaring is depressed acne scars which are the most common. The depressed scars form as a result in loss of tissue at the site of the blemish. The tissue is lot because the acne spreads inside the skin. Some collagen is lost in this process. When the acne heals the depression remains and the new skin grows over the depression.

These scars can be classified into the following categories ice pick, boxcar or rolling scars. such acne scares do not fade away with time.

The good news is these scars can be removed with surgical and physical type of procedures such as dermabrasion, chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, soft tissue filling etc. There are a few topical agents available that reduce the intensity of acne scars and lighten it.
