Acne and Stress Using Mind Control As Prevention

Does stress really cause acne and why?

What are some things I could do to manage my stress?

Those are some questions you might be asking yourself. Acne can be caused by many different reasons including genetics, age, personal hygiene, life style and stress.

There have been several studies that seem to prove the co-relation between the two, one of them having been conducted by the university of Standford where a professor of medicine grouped student of acne prone skin to test the theory and what he found was that during the proximity of the semester examinations the acne on the 22 students increased among the group.

Another study which can be found in the archive of dermatology, published references that patients exposed to increased levels of stress had a higher rate of acne then those that where not.

During periods of stress the body triggers the fight/flight response by increasing hormonal production in the adrenal glands to release more testosterone in the body specifically Dihydro Testosterone or DHT. By doing so it stimulates the sebaceous gland to secrete more oil. We know that when dead skin cells obstruct the pores of the skin combined with trapped oil provides the perfect environment for bacteria producing acne.

What could you do to aid in managing stress?

Stress is deeply associated with anxiety, a future projection of events that have not yet occurred. A student worries restless about a final exam approaching, even though the threat in this case the exam is not in the present moment. The mind creates images, associates sounds and produces feelings about the event making it real. Now the body has no other choice then to prepare itself and get in reactive mode, triggering the fight/flight mechanism that leads to stimulate the adrenaline glands. All for an event that does not yet exist.

One good technique to cope with future projections is to turn the image in your mind to a black and white film and reduce it in size. This is a proven techniques obtained by (NLP) Neuro Linguistic Programming that teaches you how to take control of your thoughts and feelings. Black and white images do not create as strong association to events as big colorful ones do.

Next time you are feeling stress ask yourself what could you do right now that will calm you down? And your subconscious will give you the answer. Get in the habit of asking questions to find the result your looking for.

Rather then asking "Why do I always get acne?" a better approach would be to ask your self what do I know I should do to prevent acne? How can I make sure I am consistent with my acne treatment? Or how can I commit to being proactive against acne?. These types of questions will lead you to take the required actions and achieve the clear skin you are looking for.
