Acne is one of the most common skin diseases in the world where it can affect almost everybody. Teenagers are mostly affected by acne but it doesn't mean that older people will never suffer from it. If you remembered your high school year, you might have experienced acne during this period. It can be a very embarrassing condition to have and you feel like everyone is watching you.

First of all, acne is caused by the blockage of the skin pores by the sebum. This is mainly caused by overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous gland. Sebum is the oily substance that your skin secretes and in normal cases, will only drain to the surface. However, because of overproduction of sebum, the pores are blocked and don't let the sebum flow on the skin. This will cause bacteria to grow inside the sebum.

Basically, there are two main types of acne, which are the non-inflammatory acne and the inflammatory acne. In the non-inflammatory acne, whiteheads and blackheads usually occur. Whitehead occur when the trapped bacteria and sebum stays below the skin surface. However, it causes blackhead when the trapped bacteria and sebum partially open to the surface. Because of the melanin, the sebum turns black.

In inflammatory acne, there are usually three phases that will occur. The first phase is the papule phase where it occurs when the follicular wall breaks. The break will result in letting the white blood cells causing the area to become inflamed. The area becomes tender and painful to touch. After about several days, the papule becomes a pustule and the white blood cells makes it to the skin's surface. In this phase you will be able to see the puss and this is what people will refer to as a pimple or as a zit.

On the third phase, the inflamed lesion can completely collapse and can also inflame the surrounding skin. This will result in nodules or cysts that can look very unattractive.
