Acne Related To Pregnancy - What Treatments Are Safe to Use?

Many changes occur in your body when you are going through a pregnancy. When your hormones are going crazy, the last thing you want to stress about is acne. Unfortunately, acne is a common side effect of pregnancy. Since most acne treatment products contain chemicals that haven't been tested enough to determine if they are safe for you and your baby, finding an effective acne treatment that is chemical free and baby safe can be frustrating.

What is Safe?

Your doctor will probably let you know the ingredients to avoid in skin care products when your pregnant. Benzoyl Peroxide, Retinol and Parabens will most likely be on the list. Those ingredients are in most acne treatments and will hide in the ingredient list under different names. (Example, Vitamin A = Retinol) This makes it difficult to identify the ingredients and shopping for products suddenly becomes frustrating and time consuming.

What you really need to know is which ingredients you can use, that will be effective in treating acne. The worry with all natural products is that they will not be as effective because the ingredients are not as powerful. This is untrue. Most chemical based acne treatments are diluted (water based) and only have a small amount of active ingredients, therefore you have to use lots and lots of the product for it to have any effect on your skin. Botanically based skin care is usually very concentrated. It will last much longer and be effective in small amounts. Natural ingredients will also be beneficial to your skin health in the long term, where as chemical acne treatments can damage your skin.

Here are my recommendations for ingredients to look for in a simple yet effective skin care regimen that will be safe for you and your baby.

Cleanser/Toner/Moisturizer - Choose products with gentle, botanical ingredients that are rich with Vitamins and Amino Acids. An Aloe Vera based cleanser would be the best choice since Aloe has natural healing and antiseptic properties. Perfect for healing blemishes. Other safe ingredients that would be beneficial in a cleanser are Glycolic Acid (Natural Exfoliator) Citrus Extracts (Natural Enzymes and Anti Oxidants) Ingredients to avoid: Retinol, Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Excessive amounts of Plant Oils and Synthetic Fragrance.

All Natural Clay Mask - Clay masks are rich in minerals and have amazing healing abilities. Since they are made up of only natural clay from the earth, there is no risk using clay masks while pregnant. I recommend Rasul Clay for the treatment of blemishes. It is a clay found naturally in Morocco and has been used for hundreds of years for its keratolytic properties(dissolves dead skin cells) and ability to control sebum production. It is also rich in the mineral Zinc, which supports the natural healing process and contributes to a healthy immune system. This makes Rasul Clay a very effective all natural acne treatment - and truly natural acne treatments are few and far between.

Using a simple regimen consistently twice a day (morning and evening) along with a healthy lifestyle will do wonders at preventing hormonal break outs. For the best results you should start this routine before you see any blemishes. Taking those preventative steps will probably save you the headache of having to deal with any hormonal acne at all.
