The Truth About Acne Scarring

There are 3 types of acne scars.

Ice pick scars
Acne pit scars
Raised scars

Ice pick scars look like giant pores. They are so called because they looked as if the skin has been jabbed with an ice pick. In reality, the pore has been destroyed by a pimple, deeply embedded in the skin, that has worked its way to the surface and destroyed the live cells it encountered.

Acne pit scars are worse. They are indented like wider shallow pits because cysts formed in the skin destroyed the skin, leaving scar tissue.

Raised scars happen when you have several cysts together and raised scar tissue is formed on the surface of the skin.

The best way to prevent acne scars is to deal with acne quickly. Treat the acne before scars can form. Don't pick the zits. You might end up scarring yourself instead. Keep your hands and hair off your face. The last thing you want is to add more bacteria

How do you get rid of acne scars?

See the doctor.

You don't have to live with acne scars for the rest of your life. There are surgical procedures that can smoothen your skin, progressively reducing the scarring with each treatment.

Ice pick scars can be smoothened away with dermabrasion or laser resurfacing.

With laser resurfacing, a carbon dioxide laser is used to smoothen the skin by removing it layer by layer. With dermabrasion, controlled surgical scraping is done by the doctor to scrape away the top layer of the skin, smoothening your skin as a result.

Deeper scars can be hidden through augmentation where collagen or fat implants may be used to even out the skin.
