How to Prevent or Erase Scars

Scars occur as a result of skin growth in a damaged area. They are the result of collagen growth beneath the skin. Scars can result from a number of factors including acne, burns, cuts, scrapes, surgery and anything basically which damages the skin enough to require a new skin growth to repair the area. Scars can fade over time but many scars can remain for a lifetime providing a permanent souvenir of that injury.

Can scars be minimised?

The best time to attempt to minimise a scar is during the healing process. Applying Vitamin E oil has been commonly thought to have a beneficial effect on reducing visible scars. However a number of studies have shown that Vitamin E has little if no effect on the outcome. Aloe Vera has been shown to be beneficial in speeding the healing process. This can be purchased in gel form or simply taken straight from the plant. Aloe Vera is a succulent plant with fleshy leaves. Cut a leaf at the base and apply the cut end directly to the wounded area.

The easiest way to prevent the formation of scar tissue is to ensure that the wound is properly cleaned and dressed and the appropriate use of antibiotics, either as a topical cream or capsule. If the injury warrants it make sure you receive the proper medical advice.

Good nutrition is also important during the healing phase. Ensure you are getting sufficient protein and vitamin C. A good quality, all round vitamin and mineral supplement would also be recommended.

Can scars be removed?

There are a number of options for scar removal. Laser Scar Removal and surgery are two options. Triamcinolone is a medication, applied by injection into the area, which can stop or slow the growth of collagen. It can also help reduce existing scars. There are also some products created specifically for improving the appearance of scars. They include silicone patches, Mederma®, Revitol™ Scar Removal Cream, Bio Oil and Medihoney Cream, based on Manuka Honey from New Zealand.

Silicone sheeting is one of the more popular solutions. These work on the principle of improving the blood flow and therefore the oxygen flow through the area. They also act to reduce inflammation. Bio Oil is applied directly to the area in a soft massaging motion and is also designed to increase the blood flow and oxygen to the area.

Remember that the best time to handle scars is at the time of wound healing. However if you are attempting to handle a scar that is a result of an older injury, there are a number of softer options that are not as drastic or expensive as surgery or leaser removal.
