What is Acne Scarring?

Acne doesn't always disappear without a trace. It can stay around for a very long time, an entire lifetime in face, due to acne scarring. Acne scarring is a serious issue for many people because of the effective it has on the skin. It can cause low self esteem and lower confidence because of the scarring. These scars often come in the form of a volcanic shape, where there is a hallowed out center like on a volcano.

Acne scarring can be caused by several different factors. When acne is created, it is because of sebum and the body's effort to attack the pimple with white blood cells. Once the pimple disappears, the tissue where the pimple was has not fully healed. Sometimes, scar tissue can show as a result. Within seven months, most of these scars will disappear although some stay around for up to two years.

When pimples are picked, popped or poked, it can cause more severe scarring and that can lead to severe acne scarring that stays around for the entire life of an individual.

Acne scars are often called ice-pick scars because they often cause an indentation in the skin's surface. These are by far the most common type of acne scarring. However, this is not the only type of acne scar that can appear on the skin.

Box car scars are angular scars that can be found on the temple and along the cheeks. They look quite a bit like chickenpox scars and are often superficial but can be deep as well.

Rolling scars are scars along the skin that create a wave-like appearance along the cheeks and forehead.

Hypertrophic scars are thickened scars caused by acne. These are not as common as other types of acne scars however but they can be the most extensive and hardest to hide.

Acne scarring is something no one wants to have. It can last an entire life and many people are very sensitive about their acne scars. They will hide them and hope no one notices. If you have acne scars, you can have laser surgery and other types of procedures that can remove the scars. Having acne scars is not the end of the world. It can be dealt with and there are many options to do so. Never think that your acne scars are going to last the rest of your life, because they don't have to.
