Teenagers and Acne - Why is it a Crisis?

A lot of teens these days are constantly being told that acne is a normal aspect of adolescence. Teenagers do not enjoy their moms and dads or their doctors telling them this, since they do not believe adults understand their situations. In reality, the probability is high that most grown people do completely understand what these teens are experiencing, since they probably went through it themselves in the not-too-distant past.

Teens are no longer helpless babies, but are going through some major bodily changes, so adults must keep in mind that they cannot see beyond the current happenings in their lives. They do not think beyond 24 to 48 hours. Teens do not have enough life experience to see when life might be better than it is currently.

Physical Looks

Teens put extreme importance on physical looks. Even if their own bedroom is a disaster area, when they go out anywhere, they like looking attractive. Since acne is not a condition that is easily concealed, teens hate it when their clear-skinned moms or dads try to help.

It is also very difficult to ignore other teens' insensitive comments when they poke fun at their embarrassing and uncontrollable condition. Teens also pay a lot of attention to TV and movie stars who are teens as well, and they question why they don't get acne like they do. They simply do not comprehend that the perfect images of these stars on front pages are the end product of extensive expert treatment and touch-up photo correction as well.

When non-prescription acne treatments do not give immediate and vivid results, teens often become despondent. Teens are used to instant gratification and can not handle the weeks-long delay that might be required to clear their skin. Rather than wait, teens attempt to speed up progress by scraping the acne or doing something else to make the situation worse.

Some teens have heard that sugar or grease will make acne worse, however, acne can appear at any time, even affecting a young lady on the evening before her school dance. When the pimples appear on her face, the beautiful gown she searched for high and low suddenly appears insignificant to her. Sadly, putting on heavy amounts of makeup might exacerbate the condition and not make it better.

Kids soak up everything we say and do, so we must impress upon them that while we comprehend their situation, they really need to turn their attention to what is inside of them and inside of others as well. Acne will probably disappear as teens age, but if something else harms the physical looks of these teens or someone they love in the future, they will be more able to look beyond the physical if you can teach them these principles now.
