How Do You Get Rid of Scars From Acne - Top 5 Most Effective Treatments

Acne is a problem that many people face in this world. But what usually goes with it, and even stays after the acne clears up, are the SCARS. What are these horrible marks and what causes these to appear on our skin? Well, scars are usually what replace one's normal skin or any other tissue in the body after damage. It is a result of one's body's natural way of repairing the injury. Take note that the tissue of the scar is made up of collagen, which is the same protein as the one it had taken the place of. However, due to the damage, the "new skin" is substandard as compared to the original.

Now, how do you get rid of scars from acne? If one is very serious about his or her situation, the best thing that one can do is to go to a dermatologist. She will analyze the patient's skin and decide on the proper clinical method to remove the scars. It can range from medicine and creams to surgical treatments. The most effective treatments will be the usual five options that the doctor will recommend. It is a good thing to read through these options briefly before consulting a doctor in order for one to get clued in on the different treatments.

One option is the laser treatment. There is the non-ablative laser, which doesn't remove the topmost layer of the skin, hence it is not destructive. Another laser option is the pulse-dye laser, which removes the redness of the acne scars. Another is the fractionated laser that makes healing time much faster. After the laser treatment, one needs to undergo collagen treatment to help get the natural, healthy state of one's skin back.

Another one of the most effective treatments is injection. How do you get rid of acne scars with injection? Well, this method is especially recommended for scars that are indented or depressed. The doctor will inject what is called derma filler, which include hyaluronic acid, collagen or fat tissue in order to raise the indented scars. The only downside to this is that it isn't permanent and the patient needs to get injections every so often since the fillers tend to break down eventually.

Microdermabrasion is another option. It is composed of numerous procedures to remove the most external part of the skin, which comprises of dead cells. This is only effective for the lightest of scars. With this treatment, the skin's texture will be enhanced and the dark spots will be lightened.

Chemical peel is another preferred, effective treatment to acne scars. How do you get rid of acne scars with this treatment? The doctor applies a chemical solution onto the scars which needs to stay on them within a distinct timeframe. This breaks up the tissue cells of the scar and enables the body to form new tissue. This results in an improved look and feel of the skin.

The last most effective treatment that can be mention is topical treatments. Outside of the clinic, the doctor might also simply write down prescription topical drugs such as AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid), glycolic acids, or Retin-A. It is a must that the doctor recommend it before one tries it out by himself for these drugs are very powerful and self-treatment might make matters worse.

Is Botox The Right Choice for Deep Acne Scars?

Pretty soon you might have Botox in your first-aid kit. This cosmetic panacea treats wrinkles, hemorrhoids, migraines and now it may treat scars.

This past August a study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that Botox (trademarked name for Botulinum toxin type A), helped facial wounds heal with minimal scarring. The investigation involved 31 patients who had a facial wound. The patients received an injection of Botox or saline within 24 hours after the wound closed.

Two plastic surgeons not involved with the study reviewed and rated the healed scars on a scale of 1-10. The improvements with Botox scored 8.9 versus 7.1 for the saline treated scars.

David Sherris, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University at Buffalo directed the study. Dr. Davis reports, "The reason this works is because wide scars are the result of the local muscles pulling the wound apart during the healing phase...Botulinum toxin temporarily weakens the surrounding muscles, thereby lessening the pull on the wound during the acute healing phase of the first 2-4 months."

Based on these preliminary findings could Botox help with deep acne scarring? According to a report issued by Kiersten Coleman and Jean Carruthers in Dermatologic Therapy in May, Botox is best used in combination therapy where all of the elements of a skin imperfection can be corrected.

Several factors lend to the size and the depth of deep acne or pitted acne scars. This includes muscle strain and collagen loss that can result from inflammed acne cysts that expand beneath the skin and cause deep tissue damage.

Relaxing a tensed facial muscle with Botox can reduce the appearance of the depth of the scar. But because of collagen loss, the scar may still be evident. At this point a physician can inject cosmetic fillers made with collagen or hyaluronic acid to completely fill the acne scar and give it a look flush with the rest of the skin.

The only issue with treating depressed acne scars with combination therapy of Botox and a cosmetic filler is that over time, the scar may reappear as the Botox effect wears off and the contents of the filler are metabolized and removed by the skin. So the smoothness of the skin may only last for six months.

Alternatively, David Goldberg reported in the September edition of the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy that using a substance called calcium hydroxylapatite as a filler did improve certain acne scarring. However the treatment did not enhance ice-pick acne scarring. According to Goldberg, the diminished scar appearance lasted up to 12 months.

Is Botox the smart choice for acne scarring? Just give it the "Cosmetic 3Rs Test": the rates, the risks and the results. Botox injections and cosmetic fillers can cost between $150-$300 per treatment. The risks include facial swelling, redness and skin allergies. Plus you want to make certain that your doctor is using FDA approved Botox for treating patients, not illegal versions that may not work or worse are too potent and lead to fatal botulism- a rare paralytic illness caused by the toxins of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

The results achieved with Botox and injections may be satisfying, but they also may only last for a few months which means that you could spend $600 plus a year to maintain the scar free look. But ultimately, if you do decide to make Botox apart of your long term plan for acne scar correction, you may feel relieved to know that a study in the December edition of the European Journal of Neurology deemed Botox to be safe and effective for long term use.

Lemon Juice - An Effective Acne Scar Treatment?

Acne is not an uncommon affliction, it affects almost everyone during their childhood and some even well into their adult lives. The severity of acne varies for each individual in some cases it is very mild causing little or no scarring, in other cases it can be very severe causing lasting scars which the individual carries with them throughout their entire life. Fortunately, there are treatments to help you get rid of your acne scars, and this is the focus of this article.

Statistics indicate that nearly seven million Americans, between the ages of twelve and twenty-five, are affected with acne. So, it is my home that this article will reach just a few of these individuals to help them with the lasting impact of acne; scars. My personal preference for the treatment of acne scars is a natural treatment, you may have heard of it; lemon juice. Of course you have heard of lemon juice; but have you heard of it in the context of an treatment for acne scars? I first learned of its potential in treating scars about three years ago while researching options for the treatment of my own acne scars.

After considering many treatments, I settled with the cheapest, which was lemon juice; it cost me a grand total of seventy-nine cents. I followed the directions from the website from which I had first learned of this treatment. They included first acquiring prepackaged or fresh squeezed lemon juice. Next, store it in a refrigerated container, I used a kitchen dish. Each day for six weeks, the website recommended applying the lemon juice topically three times per day to the scared area of skin. I done this, and it almost completely removed my acne scars. I am not a doctor, so please consult with your doctor before using this treatment because it may not have the same effect on you as it did on me.
