Acne Scars - What Treatment Can Really Remove Them?

Suffering from acne is enough of a price to pay. Dealing with the acne scars afterward is like a cruel kick while you're down. Fortunately I had heard that there were many treatments on the market that could effectively remove the embarrassing acne scars that I suffered from. However, when I started searching online for a treatment, I sadly learned that most of the solutions required me to go under the knife or have laser performed. My budget and my fear of surgery make both of those options a "No thank you". Then I saw a documentary on TV that described how certain creams can soften and improve the texture of acne scars, AND get rid of that dark discoloration my scars had. What I learned was the following:

The acne scars treatment cream has to work on two levels:

o Lifting and softening the texture of the scar

o Lightening the pigmentation (dark color) of the scar

Apparently, there were several scar removal creams on the market, but they only worked on ONE of the two important factors. I had my work cut out for me finding one that could do both.

In order to treat the acne scars on both the texture AND color levels, the cream has to contain:

o Collaxyl® (hexapeptide-9)

o Rosehip Oil

o Acai Berry

o Niacinamide

o Asafetida

The reason these ingredients are so important is that they are known to stimulate cell re-growth of the skin, clear out toxins, lighten discoloration associated with acne scars, and improve clarity and smoothness of the skin.

Actually finding a cream that has all of those proved almost impossible, until I read on an acne sufferers' forum that the Dermajuv line actually has an acne scar fading cream with those ingredients. I tried it, figuring that if it didn't work I would just return it. It actually worked great. What a long journey it has been to arrive here!

Old Acne Scars Removal

Acne scars that are old are due to the result of deep rooted scars that do not get healed naturally. There are treatments available today that help ease out the deep acne scars to improve the appearance of the skin to a great extent. Although, a permanent cure may not always be possible in severe cases, some of the treatment methods of today can provide a great improvement of the existing condition.

Natural Skin Renewal Process:

By nature, our skin keeps on renewing itself. The topmost layer of the skin is called the epidermis. Epidermis has three layers. The cells from the lower layers of the epidermis keep getting pushed to the top layers as they are produced and the old skin on the top layers flakes off. These skin layers are so minute that it is not noticeable to the naked eye.

Acne, however severe they are, almost always leave a scar when they go. The intensity of the scar depends on the layers of skin they extend into. For very mild acne, the scars do not extend beyond the topmost layer and hence the scarred skin gets peeled off and replaced immediately as soon as the acne disappears. However, if the acne is severe, the scar tissue is likely to span many layers of the skin and hence, it might take longer than usual to clear out completely. At times, the scar might extend beyond the epidermis into the next layer dermis. In such cases, natural skin renewal may not be of much help. Even the new cells that get formed will contain the acne scars.

Depending on the type of scar, an appropriate treatment method could be employed. The treatment method should be chosen carefully. The treatment methods should keep the skin's natural healing process intact and work towards aiding the skin's natural renewal process. Some of the popular treatment methods available are Microdermabrasion, Chemical treatment for acne scars, laser treatment etc. An appropriate treatment could be chosen which is suitable for ones skin needs. With some of the methods, though they provide a permanent cure, it may not be appropriate to expect an overnight cure. Patience is very important when it comes to treating old acne scars.

How Acne Scars Can Be Treated With Punch Techniques

Even after acne is treated, many sufferers of acne have to deal with the scars that it leaves. These red marks, sometimes deep enough to be termed "boxcars" or "icepicks," can be just as devastating to a person's self-image and confidence as the acne itself was. Acne scar treatment is achieved by punch techniques.

Punch techniques are minor cosmetic surgical techniques designed to make the skin look young and vibrant again. Methods for removing acne scars are varied, but they all work under the same general premise: put healthy skin next to scarred skin, and let the body heal itself. There are three general families of punch technique: replacement (also known as graft), excision and elevation.

Replacement, or graft, is just what it sounds like. A piece of healthy, non-scarred skin is taken from a different part of the body, placed over the scar, and stitched into the healthy skin surrounding the scar. This method is best for isolated scars - it doesn't work so well if there are a lot of scars next to each other.

Excision means that the scarred tissue is removed surgically. After it's gone, the two sides of what was formerly scar tissue are pulled and sutured together, then smoothed out, removing any trace that the acne scarring was ever there. For especially deep or wide scars, instead of suturing the sides together, skin is grafted onto the space where the scar tissue once was.

Elevation is most often used for acne scars with sharp edges. The scarred skin is removed as with excision, then the healthy skin underneath is elevated, then bonded to the edges of the scar using a skin glue called Dermabond. This is the most useful procedure if you don't want any skin coloration, as might happen with a graft, or small scars, as happens with excision sutures.

Any cosmetic surgical technique for removing acne scars isn't going to be perfect. Your skin is not going to look exactly like you dream, but it will look significantly clearer than a scarred skin or back. Costs typically range from $600 to $1000, depending on the severity of treatment needed, but are generally around $700-800.

Homemade Acne Scar Removal

Homemade remedies for acne scars are simple to make, but which ones work?

Let's take a look at some simple home remedies for acne scars.

1. The best natural product I have found that has cleared away my skin problem are lemons. Lemons are high in citric acid, and this acid is very good at killing bacteria, a common cause of skin inflammations. Simply rubbing the lemon juice on the effected area before bedtime, leave on overnight, and then wash it away in the morning with warm water. This is not only good on the face, but on the back too, another place where acne is prone to attacking.

2. Another high source of citric acid is tomatoes. This juice can be applied in the same way as the lemon juice. You can either buy tomato juice from your local supermarket, or make the juice yourself by simply blending a fresh tomato. Apply this to the face or affected area before bedtime, leave overnight and then wash away with warm water.

3. Garlic has been shown to work for some people. I cannot say i have tried this method, but in studies it has been shown to reduce the amount of redness and inflammation. It is important to use fresh garlic, either the raw clove or squeeze into a paste using a garlic press. This may not sound like a good way of attracting the opposite sex, but it might help you clear up your acne scars. You also might want to boost the amount of deodorant you are using to try and overpower the smell of garlic on your body.

So we have looked at some simple homemade acne scar removal treatments. Before trying any of these, it is important to try the treatment on a small area, to make sure you don't have any adverse reactions.

Scar Treatment Options

The human body usually receives a variety of injuries, including penetrating trauma, burn trauma and blunt trauma. All of these injuries set into motion an orderly sequence of events that are involved in the healing response, in which the normal functional tissue (skin) is replaced by connective tissue (scar) and the healing response is characterized by the movement of specialized cells into the wound site.

There are a variety of different scars that can be formed after an injury has occurred. The following is a brief explanation of some of these types of scars.

What are pigmentary scars? A pigmentary scar comes as a result of multiple types of damage and can appear anywhere on the body but usually means that there is no textural alteration in the skin, but the skin is noticeably discolored relative to healthy skin color. A pigmentary scar can be light, lighter or darker or redder than the healthy skin and requires to be approached very carefully in repairing with surgical or laser methods. Caution is crucial because over-correction of the scar will produce a scar of a different color more hard to treat.

What are hormone-induced scars? Hormone-induced scars usually involve melasma hormonal pigmentary disorders, which usually occur exclusively in women but not always. And they are usually on the face but not exclusively. Also, they are extremely hard to treat. Melasma or hormonal coloration change needs very slow, step-wise reversal medically with the use of lasers and needs lifelong adequate use of sunscreen to keep clear.

How are acne scars treated? Acne scars can occur anywhere on the body, not only the face. They can be of various shapes and depth and can be treated in numerous ways: sometimes with chemical peel methods, other times with surgical scar removal laser or micro-dermabrasion procedures, and with natural topical creams. No matter of the scar or number of scars, it is a long-term process to efficiently reduce acne scar visibility.

How are animal bite scars treated? They're usually treated by blending them to the surrounding non-scar skin. Common blending includes topical medical agents to soften the scars -like rosehip oil-, followed by resurfacing laser and microdermabrasion techniques for blending surface quality. And if there is a remaining color difference then oftentimes, permanent make-up, tattooing, is employed at the end.

Is cortisone still used as a treatment for skin scars? Cortisone can be used both topically and by injection into the injury to promote better healing and scar formation reduction.

There is great artistry required for the injectible cortisone to work well and it is best done by someone who clinically does this frequently.

Topical Treatments When thinking about topical natural products we must take into account that the skin is a barrier to exterior environment and will not let all products that claim to be cosmetic or dermatological ingredients into it, in the same way as it does not allow most airborne pollutants into it.

The truth is that the skin acts as a filter to assess and determines the relationship - the user-friendliness, if you will - to the interior body itself. The skin is a very adaptable organ. It is built to adapt to the ambience so it can help to keep us alive in any given climate. The most immediate ambience to our skin is what we apply on it topically. Yes, the skin care and cosmetics we select.

Acne - Getting Rid of Acne Scars

Acne scars are embarrassing and almost impossible to cover up without a noticeable amount of makeup, for men this is even more difficult to deal with. While, there is no such thing as acne scar removal in the truest sense of the phrase, there are ways to lighten the appearance of the scarring making it almost unnoticeable. This can bring you a greater sense of self and confidence which will affect every facet of your life in a positive way.

Acne scar removal treatments can be expensive, painful and embarrassing to go through, but you don't have to. There are natural remedies that are virtually free and you can perform in the privacy of your own home. While, they will not cure your acne scarring, as nothing can, they can improve your skin, diminish the appearance of scarring and prevent future breakouts.

One of the most popular natural remedies for acne scar "removal" is a scrub made from ground radish seeds and water. Ground radish seeds can be found in a variety of grocery and health food stores, as well as some pharmacies that offer alternative or natural remedy products. Use this scrub daily before bed or during your night routine and you should see results before the two week mark. Scrubs should always be done with clean skin (wash makeup off first) at the end of your day. This is because they leave the skin raw and vulnerable and should be kept away from the sun and other free radicals in the environment for the best results. After you rinse the scrub off with warm water apply a good moisturizer.

Another natural remedy you can use to soften the appearance of acne scarring is a toner made of Sandalwood and Rosewater. Both of these items can be found at a reasonably low-cost at any of the places mentioned above. Simply mix together equal parts and use as a cleanser and/or toner during your normal morning and evening skin care routine. This can be mixed up once and stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Acne scarring doesn't have to rule your life and neither do the painful, expensive treatments you see advertised. You can find a natural way to treat your acne scarring and encourage good health in your skin for little to no cost in the privacy of your own home.
